Dr. Luther A. Virgil is a practicing physician
with a specialty in Internal Medicine and
a subspecialty in Infectious Diseases. He
is currently the Chief Executive Officer
of Luther A. Virgil, M.D. & Associates
(LAVA), a medical education company located
in Marietta, GA. He is an HIV specialist
and is the Director of Clinical Research
at the Family & Medical Counseling Service
which is located in Washington, D.C. Dr.
Virgil is a nationally renowned health education
speaker and has given hundreds of presentations
in the area of Infectious Diseases for the
top 50 pharmaceutical companies and an assortment
of Federal and State agencies and community-based
organizations. As a member of several panels
established for experts in the care of those
infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus
(HIV), Dr. Virgil has taken part in the
review of therapies and therapeutic guidelines
for the treatment of HIV related disease.
Dr. Virgil has served as a member of the
Scientific Committee, IMANI Black Clinical
Research Consortium, Pharmacy Therapeutics
Committee, Infection Control Committee of
Providence Hospital and Infectious Disease
Consultant for HIV Therapy of Family Medical
Counseling Center, both healthcare facilities
located in Washington, DC.
Dr. Virgil was born in the small town of
Waycross, Georgia on November 8th. He was
raised in an environment, which stressed
the strengths of family, religion, and education.
These are the same values that he emphasizes
to his children. Due to the positive influence
of his hometown physician, Dr. Virgil decided
at an early age to pursue a career in medicine.
After successfully completing his secondary
education, he entered Howard University
in Washington, D.C. at the age of 16.
He received his Bachelors of Science Degree
in Zoology and his medical degree from the
prestigious Howard University. He continued
his education and training by completing
an Internal Medicine Internship and Residency
at Howard University Hospital.
His career since completion of his education
has been one directed at service to his
patients and his community. He has served
on the Board of Directors of community service
related companies, has taken part in many
hospital-related committees and has been
active in his local Medical Society. Above
all, he has been recognized for the dedication,
support and care of his patients.
